Olympique de Marseille have lost a key attacking asset. Mason Greenwood has left the club to join Fenerbahçe, confirmed Fabrizio Romano on X this Monday 14 July 2026. The 24-year-old English winger has signed a deal until June 2030 for a transfer fee estimated at over €50 million, including €40 million upfront plus €2 million in bonuses for Marseille. Manchester United, Greenwood’s former club, will receive over €10 million thanks to a sell-on clause included in the deal.
What happened?
The move had been on the cards for weeks. As early as August 2025, Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu reported Greenwood had agreed terms with Fenerbahçe. AS Roma also entered the race, offering a package close to €50 million including €45 million (bonuses included) and a percentage of any future sale. But the Istanbul club ultimately outbid their rivals, swaying the Englishman who favoured their project.
Greenwood arrived at Marseille in 2024 for around €26 million and leaves after just two seasons. In 81 appearances for the Phocaeans, he scored 48 goals and made 17 assists, establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s most potent forwards. His exit comes as Marseille, 11th in the league with 0 points at this early stage of the season, look to rebuild after a difficult start.
Why does Greenwood’s exit hurt Marseille?
For Marseille, losing Greenwood is a major blow. The club are banking on stability and performance to bounce back, yet see a key attacker slip through their fingers. With 0 goals scored and 0 conceded (0 goal difference) after the opening match, the club’s blank start mirrors their current struggles. Greenwood’s departure, combined with other player movements, raises questions over the club’s ability to retain talent amid a high-pressure summer transfer window.
The €50 million windfall will ease Marseille’s financial strain, but the club must act fast to replace the Englishman and avoid further squad erosion. Supporters, already frustrated after a poor start, expect swift answers from the sporting leadership.
What happens next?
Fenerbahçe have finalised Greenwood’s arrival on a contract until 2030 with an annual net salary of around €10 million. The Istanbul club are banking on the Englishman’s experience and attacking threat to bolster their Süper Lig squad. Back in Marseille, the club must now focus on the transfer market, hoping to recruit profiles capable of offsetting Greenwood’s loss without overstretching the budget.
The Phocaeans, in the midst of a rebuild, must also manage supporter pressure. With a shifting squad and a sluggish start, every decision in the coming days will be under the microscope. Marseille, 11th in Ligue 1 with 0 points, cannot afford another misstep if they are to avoid another tough season.
